How much building does a riverbank need? This study answers with a long roof, a deck, and a brick screen, and very little else.

The screen takes the west sun. The roof takes the rain. The deck is the room, until the weather says it is not. When the air is good, the building is mostly a shade. When the wind rises, the solid wall and the door are enough to close.

It could be a family pavilion or the edge of a larger house. The principle is the same. Do not compete with the water. Make one precise edge and stop.

Close view of sunlight passing through a brick jali onto a plaster wall.
The screen is the west wall. The stripes are the point.

  2. 02

A screen sized to the afternoon, not to a pattern book.

  3. 03

An edge that knows when to stop.
